Idanha-a-Nova is an example of how health and sustainability go hand in hand. That’s why the European Union recognized Idanha-a-Nova as the best Bio-Region in Europe in 2023 and distinguished its “Restart” strategy in 2024 as one of the 116 good practices to be replicated in the context of the European URBACT program. Under the principle “we are what we eat”, Portugal’s first Bio-Region has been working on the transition to healthy, sustainable and inclusive food systems. It thus promotes strategies that value organic farming and encourage the practice of short marketing circuits, in which farmers, citizens, schools, tour operators, associations and local authorities establish partnerships for the sustainable management of local resources. With this “One Health, One Planet” concept, Idanha-a-Nova, a UNESCO territory, promotes environmentally friendly and innovative environmental, social and economic policies aimed at building a healthier and more sustainable society. Idanha-a-Nova shows that defending human and environmental health is not only possible, but essential for facing the challenges and ensuring the future of our planet.
