Is Associate Professor at the University of Maia, where he is Vice-Rector, Director of the Research Center in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development (CIDESD) and course coordinator of the PhD program in Sports Sciences. He is also Vice-Director of the CIDESD national consortium. His research focuses on exploring the role of exercise in chronic kidney disease, particularly investigating its effects on immune function, inflammation, muscle and bone metabolism as well as evaluating the clinical implementation of exercise interventions for dialysis patients. João serves as board member of the Global Renal Exercise Network, the Portuguese Association of Exercise Physiologists and the Portuguese Association of Kidney Disease Rehabilitation.
